Investing in the Future: The Elgin Opera House's Commitment to Youth and Education

At the heart of the Elgin Opera House is a powerful belief: the arts have the ability to inspire, educate, and transform young lives. Through our Friends of the Opera House initiative, we are proud to champion arts education, creativity, and leadership development for the next generation.

Under the direction of Terry Hale, a nationally recognized Freddie G Fellowship recipient, our youth programs reflect the highest standards of excellence in theater education. The Freddie G Fellowship, awarded by Music Theatre International and the Broadway Junior program, honors outstanding educators who demonstrate exceptional commitment to young performers. As one of only a handful of recipients chosen from across the country, Terry brings world-class insight, training, and inspiration directly to our local youth.

Each summer, our theater camps come alive with energy and imagination as young performers learn, grow, and shine on stage—many for the very first time. These camps foster more than just theatrical skills; they build confidence, teamwork, and creativity in a joyful, encouraging environment.

Year-round, our Youth Programs offer hands-on learning in acting, stagecraft, technical theater, and production. From lighting and sound to costume and set design, students are empowered to take ownership of every aspect of the creative process.

Through Youth Service and Leadership opportunities, our young volunteers take on vital roles across the organization—directing, choreography, assisting backstage, mentoring younger participants, and even taking leadership roles as actors in productions. These experiences build character, responsibility, and a deep appreciation for the arts.

The Elgin Opera House is more than a stage—it's a launching pad for young artists and future leaders. Thanks to the guidance of Terry Hale and many other passionate directors and educators, and the support of the Friends of the Opera House, we remain deeply committed to nurturing the talents, dreams, and potential of every young person who walks through our doors.
